Speed limit lowered on part of Highway 17

It’s now the law to drive slower on a half-mile stretch of Highway 17.

The speed limit has been lowered from 65 mph to 55 mph from the base of Scotts Valley up to Vine Hill Road.

Santa Cruz County Supervisor Bruce McPherson said it’s for safety reasons. He’s worked closely with Caltrans and the Scotts Valley Public Works Department to make the change possible. The goal is to give drivers more reaction time if there’s an accident.
