Finding Super Bowl security guards in Salinas

Countdown to Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara is just months away. It’s one event that’s nearly impossible to attend unless you’re willing to throw down big bucks for a ticket. On Wednesday there was a recruitment event at America’s Job Center of California in Salinas. Want to be a security guard at the biggest football game of the year? That was an easy question for retired security guard, Tom Bush who jumped at the chance to sign up.

“It’s a great opportunity because it’s expensive to go there. It’s the only way I get to, plus I like to work,” said Bush.

Getting a security job to work at Levi’s stadium is a plus too.

“I’m a huge fan, I love football, love the 49ers,” said Bush.

Security Guards for the Super Bowl must have something called, “a guard card” that shows they have the proper training. Bush flashed his guard card and said he has 30 years of experience. The question is why use a security company from the central coast?

“I personally talked to the selection committee and I literally begged them and pleaded with them, you have to give us a shot because we are kind of underdeveloped counties,” said Peninsula Security owner, Abdul Razzak.

Peninsula Security has about 30 security guards ready for Super Bowl 50 but they’re looking to hire more. Not every security guard out there qualifies. Candidates must be clean cut, no tattoos and then pictures of them are sent to the NFL for review.

All of that for a chance to earn $11 to $14 an hour. Bush said he doesn’t care, as long as he’s there for Super Bowl 50.

“Should be exciting you know this will be the first time I’m ever at a Super Bowl,” said Bush.

Levi stadium is more than an hour away but for those lucky enough to snag their temporary dream job they don’t have to worry about the drive.

“We do realize it’s a long commute and therefore we are providing the transportation,” said Razzak.

Super Bowl 50 kicks off February 7 but applicants can expect to work 5 days in advance.

“Very exciting time even though it’s over in February, I’m getting excited already. Well it’s football season,” said Bush.

Peninsula Security is still taking applications. Of course lots of people will be tuning in to watch Super Bowl 50 on February 7. If you’re one of them, just a reminder that you’ll be able to watch it on KION, News Channel 5.
