Can’t blame the Sandman for sand disappearance

There’s something missing from Moran Lake Park Beach in Santa Cruz. We’ve got the surf, we’ve got the sun (kind of), but we’re missing the sand.

Over the weekend, sea glass hunters banked on thephenomenon. Turns out, Mother Nature is behind the sand disappearance.

“This is part of the seasonal ebb and flow of the ocean and our natural environment,” Santa Cruz County Parks Director Jeff Gaffney said. “The effect of climate change is unknown, and we can never predict what Mother Nature will do.”

Referred to as a winter berm, high tide can literally pull sand off the beach and into the ocean. This happens every winter at Moran Lake Park Beach.

But don’t worry, the sand will be back as the season changes.
