Councilmember withdraws from assembly district race

An unexpected announcement today in the race for the state assembly seat for the area that includes Watsonville, parts of Monterey and all of San Benito County.

“I’m happy to support Anna caballero in that effort that she is making to return to the assembly.”

Gilroy city council member Peter Leroe-Munoz has ended his campaign for state assembly and has thrown his support behind Anna Caballero.

She’s running for the 30th assembly district seat. Cabellero is a former state cabinet secretary and Salinas mayor. She’s been a Salinas resident for nearly 30 years.

She said she didn’t expect the endorsement.

“He’s been in the race for a number of months, he’s obviously a very talented person and has a very large base of support in Gilroy and Morgan Hill and when he called me I was surprised and very pleased,” said Caballero.

“It really didn’t take a whole lot of time on my part to decide that supporting her would be a great move for this region,” said Leroe-Munoz.

Caballero’s only opponent will be Watsonville city councilwoman Karina Cervantez, also a Democrat.
