Big Sur community says it’s prepared for winter weather
A flash flood watch is in effect for the Big Sur Coast Tuesday morning. Community members said Monday they’re prepared and ready for flooding.
“We’re not worried. We need the rain,” said Riverside Campground employee Pam Cromie.
Located on the Big Sur River, Cromie said they are no stranger to rain or flooding. She said emergency exit plans are always in place for campers.
“When the river comes over our bridge we call and direct them through our
neighboring campground. We’re prepared,” said Cromie.
The Big Sur River Inn has its own plan in place. During heavy rains, local employees are on standby just in case roads are closed preventing staff that live outside the area from getting to work.
“We have a good phone tree system here. Most of them are all willing to
fill in and do extra shifts or do whatever it takes to keep the River Inn
going,” said manager James Barrow.
Like most businesses in Big Sur, Barrow said they have back-up generators in case of power outages.
Also near the entrance to Pfeiffer Beach there’s a sand bag station.
Locals said it’s all just part of winter life in Big Sur.
“Whatever happens we’ll be able to take care of it very well,” said Barrow.
