After Christmas sales expected to trump Black Friday
“After Christmas doesn’t hurt, we figured we’d get a good price,” said Cliff Charney from Boston, MA.
Christmas may be over but steep discounts, cashing in on gift cards and the need to exchange gifts drew consumers back into stores.
“God bless my girlfriend she bought me some game headphones and they just did not work out very well,” said Marina resident Austin Painter. “So I decided I would come in and pick up some new ones.”
American express is calling December 26th the new Black Friday, with 66% of Americans expected to shop the day after Christmas versus 45% percent who shopped on Black Friday.
Clothing and electronics are the big ticket items.
“The television I have is about 20 years old,” said Iris Charney-Sullivan of Carmel Valley. “It’s a lovely TV but it’s time for it to go bye bye.”
“I disagree it’s not a lovely TV,” said Cliff.
Some stores even opened their doors earlier than usual to give customers a head start on shopping.
“We are offering our price match guarantee,” said Donna Maricle with Best Buy. “So we do price match other competitors at this time.”
Small businesses are also getting in on the day after Christmas business.
“This time of year we have things that have been here a long time,” said Potstop owner Bob Goode. “Special items that we offer at half price.”
Potstop in Moss Landing says they’re seeing customers looking for more unique finds and adventure.
“A lot of traffic today and it’s exciting to have people come and visit us,” said Goode.
Businesses also tell us they’re predicting the upcoming days to busy as well because locals returning home from holiday travels will want to shop.
