Santa Cruz Sheriff’s offering businesses active shooter training
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s office says they respond to a few calls a week that involve concerns about workplace safety.
“Just two coworkers upset with eachother, somebody got demoted and they’re upset,” said Sgt. Greg Lansdowne with the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office. “Somebody got disciplined and they’re upset those are the kinds of calls we’ll get sometimes.”
In light of the deadly workplace shooting in San Bernardino the Sheriff’s Office is now offering employee safety for workplace violence training teaching staff how to deal with active shooters or violent people.
“If you had a plan and you thought about it I think you’ll be able to deal with the situation better when it occurs,” said Lansdowne.
At your request a deputy will come on site and give a 20-30 minute presentation with the basic message being leave, run, fight.
“If you can’t run, you can’t hide, you may have to fight,” said Lansdowne. “If you do have to fight you have to be committed to that because you’re life depends on it.”
Roux Dat Cajun Creole Restaurant is located in a busy shopping plaza in Capitola with different types of retail, shoppers and sometiems surprises.
“I think it’s everywhere in Santa Cruz you get a couple of crazies in there but not too bad compared to other places,” said Molly Henderson with Roux Dat Cajun Creole.
The family run businesses says the San Bernardino shooting was a bit of a wake up call and that scheduling a 30 minute training with the Sheriff’s office to get prepared for anyone who walks through the door is a good idea.
“There’s a lot of crazy stuff going on these days,” said Henderson. “To be prepared especially people who are you know kind of working and not prepared for anything should be prepared for anything that could happen.”
