Gun sales spike in CA after San Bernardino Shooting
California gun and ammunition sales have increased in the last few days.
Gun Owners of California believe it has to do with the deadly shooting in San Bernardino.
Firearm owners are now concerned about safety and talks of stricter gun laws.
Gun owners we talked to say politics is not the only thing that’s sending more people to firearm stores but also fear.
“I usually have 8 to 10 uppers on the wall right now I’m down to four,” said David Wasson, owner of 831 Shooter.
Wasson says after the terrorist attacks in Paris he started to see an increase in people wanting to buy gun supplies and take his conceal and carry class, especially seniors.
“People are coming to the realization that you can’t count on other people all the time,” said Wasson. “You need to be able to defend yourself.”
The firearms instructor says now the massive shooting in San Bernardino has brought on another wave of fear and a boost to his business.
“They’re calling me, they’re emailing me, they’re contacting me through Facebook,” said Wasson. “They’re stopping by here specifically because this happened in California.”
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office says it gets between 10 to 20 people a month applying for a concealed weapon permit.
“It’s definitely not an easy process,” said Sheriff Steve Bernal.
Bernal says the lengthy steps involve an application, interview and rigorous background check.
“We don’t want to make it easy for somebody to be able to be granted a permit to carry a concealed firearm.”
While gun experts and law enforcement hope you never have to use a gun they recommend proper training if you do choose to carry.
“It’s always a great idea to go out and learn safety,” said Bernal. “Take a hunter safety course, gun safety course and learn how to use a firearm.”
The Sheriff’s Office says the process to obtain a carry concealed weapon permit can sometimes take months.
Gun experts say some people are arming themselves with tasers and stun guns until they get that certification.
