Santa Cruz couple building care packages for homeless
“We don’t have the money to do anything but we have time and we thought we would get it started and it’s taken off,” said Calli Morrow.
Socks, mittens, food and much more are what Morrow and her boyfriend Spencer Winnick are using to create care packages for the homeless in Santa Cruz to help keep them warm this winter.
“I think in a lot of ways its giving hope and just a sense of humanity,” said Winnick.
To raise money to build 50 care packages they started a GoFundMe account.
That goal was quickly met and now they’re aiming even higher.
“A big piece that like people don’t understand is that these are people too,” said Winnick. “When we show each other compassion and humanity that goes a long way.”
The project is called Love for Santa Cruz Homeless.
The couple says they got the idea after fulfilling a little girl’s Christmas wish for a pair of pants.
“That was like the one thing on this girls list, really hit home for us,” said Winnick. “We realized there has to be so many more people out there needing just essential things.”
According to reports more than 2,000 people in Santa Cruz are homeless.
Calli too has been in that position.
“For like four years in elementary and middle school we lived in hotels and things like that,” said Morrow. “So coming from that place I know the help is needed.”
Instead of giving the packages to an agency the couple has decided to deliver them by hand.
“We want to be the ones giving it to them that way we know everything is going exactly where’s its needed,” said Morrow.
The couple says they plan to give out the packages in December.
Donations are still needed.
