UPDATE: New veteran driver license program

Just in time for Veterans Day, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced a new program honoring Veterans.

Beginning Nov. 12, servicewomen and servicemen can apply for a “veteran” designation on California driver licenses.

“I encourage our Veterans to contact a local CVSO and start the process and learn about their earned benefits, just as I have,” CalVet Secretary Dr. Vito Imbasciani said. “As an added bonus, the new ‘Veteran’ designation means businesses can easily confirm veteran status when offering discounts.”

The California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Department of Veterans Affairs made the announcement Tuesday in Sacramento.

Here are the steps:

1. Get Records: Find military discharge certificate (DD214)

2. Visit any CVSO: Take DD214 form and government identification to any County Veteran Service Officer for a Veteran Status Verification Form (844-737-8838 or www.calvet.ca.gov)

3. Visit any DMV: Bring Veteran Status Verification Form, pay fee, complete all application and testing requirements (800-777-0133 or www.dmv.ca.gov)
