Big expansion on the way for Monterey Skatepark

A big expansion is on the way for the Monterey Skatepark. The park will close for 45 days, starting Friday, for the construction work.

The city of Monterey is spending $176,000 to renovate the 16-year-old park along Lake El Estero. The Neighborhood Improvement Program is funding the project.

“Our popular skatepark is aging and can be overcrowded,” said Mayor Clyde Roberson. “We’ve heard from local kids that it was time to introduce new features and expand the park.”

Up ahead, an additional 4,000 square feet and several new obstacles: a new pyramid, pipe rails and two ramps.

M.G. Creations Construction, which helped build skateparks in Capitola, Pinole and Santa Cruz, will oversee the construction.
