SPECIAL REPORT: Could a Bay Area program reducing homicides work for Salinas?
An innovative outreach program in Richmond, CA has been credited with cutting down the number of homicides in the city.
The program has helped reduce the city’s problem after seeing an average of 40 homicides a year from 2003-2009, dropping to 11 in 2014. That marks the lowest total since 1973.
The non-law enforcement program says its focusing on the small group of dangerous people committing the majority of firearm violence.
Because Salinas has surpassed its record number of homicides in a single year, NewsChannel 5’s Jake Reiner is investigating if this program could work in the Salad Bowl.
He will have more on this story Thursday at 6 on KION and 10 on CW.
