Marina city leaders vote down proposed restaurant development
Marina City Council axed a controversial proposal that wouldhave addednew restaurants to the Dunes Shopping Center off General Stilwell Drive.
At a special council meeting Monday night, city leaders voted 3-2 against the project. The council was torn between wanting to bring in thousands of dollars in revenue but also staying in line with the goals of the city. As it stands, the design of the project violates the General Plan.
The Dunes Shopping Center has everything from retail shops to a movie theater. But some are asking, “Where’s the food?”
“I would like to see some more restaurants here because I think it would be more convenient,” said shopper Leslie Rueles.
Developer Scott Negri agrees. He said he has spent months trying to get fast casual restaurants in the shopping center, along with two drive-thru lanes that raised many questions for city leaders.
“What happens if there’s seven to ten cars cuing up? Where do they go when they’re cued?” asked Mayor Bruce Delgado.
Other city leaders had questions about parking and the overall walkability of the shopping center.
“Would you be willing to add a pedestrian access between buildings B and C?” asked council member David Brown.
Still, people here say they want restaurants. There’s even a petition circulation with almost 500 signatures, along with some suggestions.
“I would like to see an in and out or like a Round Table,” said Rueles.
