UPDATE: Victim killed in wharf crash Saturday night identified

UPDATE 10/19/15 7:45 PM:Santa Cruz Police have identified the 19-year-old who died over the weekend after the car he was in drove off the Santa Cruz Wharf and plunged into the water.

Robert Halpin of Santa Cruz died Saturday night. A second occupant in the vehicle remains in critical condition, police said.

Witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling at a high speed before turning into a parking space and then crashing through a railing and then into the water, police said.

The Santa Cruz Police Department will conduct a full inspection of the vehicle to determine in mechanical issues played a role in the crash.

UPDATE 10/18/15 10:30 AM: One of the two men who were in the car that drove off the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf last night has been pronounced dead and the other is in critical condition, according to Santa Cruz Police.

The men have not been identified yet. And police said what caused the driver to crash is still unclear.

UPDATE: 10/17/15 9:00 PM: A car drove off the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf Saturday night, dispatchers confirmed.

Two people were inside the car and were rescued by emergency crews. One was transported to the Santa Cruz Harbor and the other was brought to shore at Cowell Beach, dispatchers said.

The conditions of the victims are unknown and the circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear.
