UPDATE: MoCo DA identifies man killed during officer-involved shooting

UPDATE 10/7/15: The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office has identified the man killed during an officer-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon in Monterey.

Investigators said Donald Thomas Miller II, 39, was killed after six shots were fired by Officer Zac Reed. Reed has been with the Monterey Police Department for 1 1/2 years and previously worked with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office for six years.

Prosecutors said Miller was arrested earlier Tuesday for trespassing at a McDonalds. He was later released.

The DA’s Office said later Tuesday Miller stole a “non-functional antique revolver” and placed it in his waistband. Witnesses said they became fearful after seeing Miller waiving the western-style gun around near Portola Plaza and Indian Summer Hookah Bar.

Prosecutors said Reed was the only officer to respond to the call. He and witnesses are still being interviewed. Reed is now on administrative leave, according to the DA’s Office.

Miller was known to have mental health issues and lived on and off in Salinas, investigators said. They don’t know if drugs or alcohol were involved yet and are waiting for results from an autopsy.

The last time Monterey Police had an officer-involved shooting was 25 years ago, according to the DA’s Office. Surveillance video of the incident from nearby businesses is being reviewed.
