UPDATE: Third suspect identified in Sand City officer-involved shooting

UPDATE: 9/23/15 11:55 a.m.: The Monterey County District Attorney’s office has identified the third suspect, and the only suspect taken into custody, in the officer-involved shooting at the Target in Sand City Monday afternoon.

Investigators said the suspect is Gregory Allen Warren. At this point, the District Attorney’s office is not charging him with any crime related to the shooting. However, they said he violated probation by being around the other suspects.

Investigators are looking to determine if he played any role in Monday’s shootout.

UPDATE 9/22/15 9:55 p.m.: Williams Spaits and Tina Money, the suspects killed outside the Target in Sand City Monday afternoon, had a criminal history with law enforcement, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s office.

“Mr. Spaits had no bail warrant for a parole violation. He also had approximately $300,000 dollars in other warrants and Miss Money had six outstanding warrants totalling about $130,000 dollars,” said District Attorney Dean Flippo.

Investigators said Spaits was involved in a burglary at a home in Pebble Beach Monday morning. Spaits got away with a credit card and shortly after he and Money used the card at store in Marina. A be on the lookout” was issued to law enforcement.

Officers responded to the Target in Sand City after a security guard said he recognized both suspects.

“Mr. Spaits actually runs back towards the car and officers are following him and he jumps in the car and the shooting begins,” Flippo added.

Two officers suffered non-life threatening injuries, police said. Both suspects were killed.

Sources tell News Channel 5 a third person was in the backseat of the car. That person was arrested. Investigators said his connection to the suspects is currently under investigation.

UPDATE 9/22/12:00 p.m.: The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified both suspects shot and killed outside Target in Sand City Monday afternoon.

Deputies said William Spaits, 27, of Seaside and Tina Money, 23, of Seaside were the two suspects killed.

Police said gunfire was exchanged between Spaits and Money and two officers who contacted them about outstanding warrants.

On Tuesday, Sand City Police said both officers are doing well. One was treated and released from the hospital Monday night and the other is expected to be released soon.

UPDATE 9/21/2015 5:04 p.m.: The Sand City Police Department said two officers were shot outside Target Monday afternoon during a confrontation with two suspects. Both officers were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and are expected to be OK.

“I was walking through at the time and I heard gunshots,” said a witness.

Both suspects are dead and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office will be handling the investigation.

Police said the officers tried to contact the two suspects in the parking lot. Both were wanted by police. During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged between the suspects and police.

“We’re very concerned about our officers. We’re very concerned for the families of the people that have been killed. Fortunately, there were no innocent bystanders injured,” said Sand Police Chief Brian Ferrante.

Target is closed Monday night.

UPDATE: Two Sand City officers shot outside Target, two suspects killed

UPDATE 9/21/15 4:20 p.m.: Two Sand City police officers and two more people have been shot, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies also said the suspect has been killed.

UPDATE 9/21/15 4:03 p.m.: The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said two Sand City police officers were shot near the parking lot in front of the Target Monday afternoon.

There may be additional people who were hurt, including a suspect.

Dispatchers said the officers were flown to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas. NMC is currently on lockdown.
