Teen arraigned in Maddy Middleton’s death
The teen accused of killing 8-year-old Maddy Middleton was in court Monday to hear the charges against him. Adrian Gonzalez plead not guilty and denied all allegations. Adrian Gonzalez, 15, made his way into the courtroom Monday morning, showing little emotion as he stood next to his attorney.
Before a Santa Cruz County judge, Gonzalez plead not guilty to the murder of Madyson Middleton. Gonzalez is going through the legal process in adult court because of the severity of the crimes committed.
“In my opinion this mandatory process with it’s irretrievable consequences is simply not right,” said public defender Layla Sayra.
Gonzalez is accused of kidnapping, tying up, raping and killing Middleton back in July. The two were neighbors at the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz. That’s where investigators found her body inside a recycling bin. On Monday, the judge denied a fitness hearing for Gonzalez, such a hearing would determine whether the case is appropriate for juvenile or adult court. Gonzalez’ attorney said he deserves that opportunity.
“A hearing that would take a look not just at the offense but the background and the social history of a young offender,” said Sayra.
Prosecutors said because of Proposition 21 the D.A.’s office is allowed to file directly to adult court.
“We have followed the law, we have followed the will of the people of the state of California and we have made appropriate decisions and appropriate charging decisions,” said Santa Cruz County D.A. Jeff Rosell.
Gonzalez will be back in court for his preliminary hearing October 29. If convicted he could face life in prison.
