Gonzalez pleads not guilty to Middleton murder

During a Monday morning court appearance, the 15-year-old accused of killing 8-year-old Maddy Middleton, was arraigned on several charges against him. Adrian Jerry Gonzalez is accused of kidnapping, tying up, raping and killing Middleton in July.

Gonzalez pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and was denied a fitness hearing to determine whether his case should be heard in adult or juvenile court. Gonzalez is being tried as an adult in Santa Cruz County. His preliminary hearing will be October 29.

Middleton’s family members who gathered outside the courthouse Monday morning had mixed view points as they reflect on Gonzalez’s case. Middleton’s father said he has forgiven Gonzalez and is asking the community to remain peaceful. Another family member was still very upset, saying the Santa Cruz community is suffering because of Maddy’s killing.
