Whale fossil located at construction site in Scotts Valley

A whale fossil is being unearthed near Santas Village Road in Scotts Valley on a housing development, according to Paleo Solutions.

The Southern California company said it was contracted to have a paleontologist on-site during construction, just in case something was found.

Paleontologists said the fossil was located by a construction crew about two weeks ago. They know it’s a filter-feeding whale, but aren’t sure what type of whale.

Based on the rock formation it was found in, paleontologists estimate the whale fossil is about five million years old.

A crew of five people are working to remove rock surrounding the fossil. That rock will be taken to a lab in Monrovia, CA.

Later, the fossil will be taken to a museum in California and the exact location has not been determined yet.
