Monterey church seeks donations for fire victims

Folks across California are doing what they can to help those affected by the Northern California Valley fire. It’s hitting especially close to home for one central coast pastor.

Today the Monterey United Methodist Church started collecting items for fire relief victims in Middletown. That’s where local pastor Cindy Storr lived and worked years ago. Now she and the church are doing what they can to help bring in fire relief donations. The United Christian Parish in Lakeport, 35 miles north of Middletown said they need flashlights, batteries, sleeping bags, storage bins, and tents. Thursday was day one of collecting those donations and residents in the area stepped up their efforts.

“Of course right away I thought what in the world would I do if I was faced with this situation where I had to evacuate with nothing but my purse and my pets and my husband. It really struck a cord,” said Pacific Grove resident, Jane Sullivan.

“As a church it’s our mission our service to reach out to others to do what we can locally or at a distance,” said Methodist Church member, Melanie Winchester.

The church asks folks to please bring new items only. People can drop donations off at One Soledad Drive in Monterey, weekdays between 9 a.m. and noon.
