Skeletal remains of missing Seaside woman found in Monterey
A case behind a Seaside woman, who went missing in 1982, has turned into a homicide investigation after her skeletal remains were recovered from the yard of a Monterey home, according to police.
Monterey Police said officers responded to the home in the 1100 block of Third St. on Sept. 2 after a landscaping contractor found the remains while renovating the yard.
Investigators said those remains are of Sandra McGee.
According to the website CharleyProject.org, McGee was last seen Dec. 9, pumping gas at the Quik Stop on North Fremont St. in Monterey with a hitchhiker.
Police said the hitchhiker, Alfred Powell, is the person of interest in her death and disappearance.
The website states Powell is currently serving a life sentence in prison for the killing of another young woman in 1983. Monterey Police said the McGee case is still being investigated and has not been forwarded to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office yet.
