Salinas councilman files complaint against the city
Jose Castaneda has filed a complaint against the City of Salinas after the council’s decision to censure him.
Castaneda is calling the censure illegal.
Castaneda and his attorney claim the city violated the civil rights act and voting rights act, leaving residents in District 1 without a voice to represent them.
“We have a council and mayor that decided to violate my civil rights and my voting rights not only myself, but the district I represent,” said Castaneda.
Councilman Castaneda is calling for the city to take away the censure and reinstate an old city policy allowing any council member to place items on city council agendas.
If that doesn’t happen, a lawsuit could be filed against the city.
City attorney Chris Callahan said the issue will be brought to the council on September 15 th in closed session.
Castaneda will not be allowed inside the meeting because he filed the complaint.
