UPDATE: Pacific Grove police chief announces her departure
UPDATE 9/7/15: The Pacific Grove Police Officer’s Association confirms Police Chief Vicki Myers announced she will no longer be working for the department during a briefing on Saturday.
NewsChannel 5 is working to get more information from the City of Pacific Grove.
PREVIOUS STORY 7/6/15: Two police unions, one in Pacific Grove and the other in Seaside, are taking action against Police Chief Vicki Myers.
Both unions have sent a letter to the city manager, reaffirming their vote of no confidence agains Myers. Nearly 55 members between the two police officers associations said morale is down in both departments.
“Crime is increasing. We’re seeing way more property crimes than we had,” Sgt. Carl Lafata said with Pacific Grove POA.
Representatives from both unions said there’s also been more shootings in Seaside, more drug cases and dozens of thefts. They said officers can’t adequately patrol their respective cities because they’re under staffed and many times working 12 hour shifts. They said those problems could get worse.
“There are other officers looking to leave, just in the last several months. We’ve head three officers leave to neighboring agencies,” Tony Snell said with Seaside POA.
Both want Myers to go, saying there’s no compromise at this point. We couldn’t reach the chief Monday. But when asked about these claims in the past, Myers said the claims are unfounded and she has always been willing to work with her staff.
“This is essentially a unanimous decision by both POA’s. This isn’t, as she might try to play, as Chief Myers might play it off as the rantings of a disgruntled few,” Lafata said.
