Hiker falls down cliff in Big Sur, drowns in ocean

A hiker died after sliding down a cliff near Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s office.

Medina Faraz, 20, was hiking in the area of McWay Falls in Big Sur around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Faraz was climbing down and around a seaside cliff when she fell into the ocean. Officials said she wasn’t wearing proper equipment or clothing.

The preliminary cause of death appears to be drowning.

Monterey County Search and Rescue and the California State Parks helped recover her body.
