Hundreds of new students move into CSUMB
College students are getting ready for the new school year by moving into the dorms at Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday. With the rising costs of higher education, NewsChannel 5 spoke to some freshmen about how they’re making ends meet.
Since Friday some 3,700 new students are moving in. Of those, about 1,000 are freshmen. One of them is Jocelyn Hayden from Atwater. She said CSUMB is the place to be for her major.
“My major is Marine Biology so this is the perfect place for my major,” Hayden said. “So, I obviously chose this, and it’s only two hours away from home.”
Her close proximity makes her parents happy. Not to mention, she’ll pay instate tuition. Jocelyn is getting financial aid to fund her education and she’s thinking about getting a part-time job to have some spending money or to use in an emergency.
Dean Bottomley of San Diego is moving in his youngest son, Dane. He knows how expensive tuition and housing costs are. While it’s hard saying goodbye to the kids, it’s also hard parting with all that money to pay their college. In Dean’s case, he’s buying two.
“Where the other one went was a lot more expensive because he chose an out of state school,” Bottomley said. “So it was a bit more expensive. We’re kinda happy with the choice that he (Dane) made.”
Despite the financial sacrifice, both parents said going to college is worth it.
“I know he’s going to do good,” Bottomley said. “So I think he will be fine.”
“I just want her to keep in touch, but I’m proud of her,” said Nidia Hayden, Jocelyn’s mom. “I’m proud of her. I know she’s gonna go places.”
