Monterey promotes interim police chief to permanent position

Monterey has named its next police chief following a public recruitment process, competitive screening and interview process.

Interim Police Chief Dave Hober will now transition into the permanent position of Police Chief starting July 16. His annual salary will be $177,288.

Hober joined the department in February as the assistant chief to former Chief Phil Penko who retired in May.

“I feel extremely lucky to be able to work in this capacity with the Monterey Police Department,” Hober said. “I am so proud of the men and women of this organization and the excellent service they provide to our community.”

Hober comes to Monterey with 27 years of experience in law enforcement. He started in San Jose where he was promoted to deputy chief and managed as many as 700 sworn and professional staff. Hober has also worked as a special agent with the FBI.

Hober grew up in Santa Cruz. He and his family now live on the Monterey Peninsula.
