UPDATE: Santa Cruz County investigators ID teen killed in Boulder Creek OIS

UPDATE 7/13/15 12:18 p.m.: On Monday, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office identified the teen killed after pointing a rifle at deputies last week at a home in Boulder Creek.

Investigators said Cyrus Hurtado, 17, died during the incident where deputies fired four times.

The Sheriff’s Office said nn autopsy result is expected after toxicology information is revealed in a few weeks.

UPDATE 7/10/15 11:56 a.m.: A 17-year-old is dead after hitting his grandfather with a club and pointing a rifle at deputies during a family fight Thursday night in Boulder Creek, according to the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said two deputies shot the teen four times after he came out of the home on Fern Flat Rd. with a rifle in hand and aimed it at deputies.

Investigators said the teen was air lifted to a trauma center in the Bay Area, where he later died during an operation.

During their investigation, deputies learned the teen hit his 70-year-old grandfather with a club and killed a kitten in the driveway. Deputies said they tried to make contact with the teen, using a negotiator but he didn’t respond and continued walking around inside the home. Before exiting the home with a rifle, deputies said at one point he also came out of the home with a club.

The Sheriff’s Office said investigators don’t know if the rifle was loaded.

Deputies previously responded to a call at the house in 2013, where the teen reportedly threatened to kill his grandparents with a knife.

Both deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as a standard procedure but are expected to be back at work next week. The Sheriff’s Office said one of the deputies involved has two years of experience and the other has six years of experience.

The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office plans to investigate the incident, which is standard procedure.

UPDATE 7/10/15 9:29 a.m.: The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office confirms the armed man shot by deputies late Thursday night had died.

The man was initially taken to the hospital for treatment.

PREVIOUS STORY: The Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened late Thursday night just before midnight.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff deputies responded to a call around 10:00 p.m. about some sort of family fight at a home on the 15000 Fern Flat Road in Boulder Creek.

Upon arrival, deputies were confronted by a man with two firearms. For reasons still unknown, deputies shot the suspect.

He is undergoing surgery in the hospital and his condition is unknown.

This is the first officer involved shooting this year for the Sheriff’s Office.
