Central Coast law enforcement warn drivers not to drink and drive

The holiday weekend is approaching and with it comes a lot of celebrations. But there’s also a warning from law enforcement – don’t drink and drive.

Officers are out early this year, looking for offenders. Wednesday night NewsChannel 5 was in Capitola where police were pulling over drunk drivers.

Capitola Police conducted a DUI checkpoint from 8 p.m. Wednesday to about 1 a.m. Thursday. During a checkpoint, cars line up and if officers detected the driver may be under the influence, the person is pulled over in to parking lot for sobriety test.

In Capitola, officers checked over 600 vehicles at a stop on 41st Street and arrested four people for DUI.

Salinas, Greenfield Police and California Highway Patrol are conducting checkpoints this weekend. Salinas Police will hold one Thursday starting at 6 p.m. On Friday, Greenfield Police will also have a checkpoint set-up. CHP also begins its maximum enforcement period.

In Santa Cruz, triple fine zones will be in affect Friday through Sunday.
