Salinas named ‘All-America City’ for 2015

With the chant, “SA-LI-NAS!” the delegates accepted the 2015 ‘All-America City’ award on Sunday night.

The National Civic League was founded in 1894 to promote democracy, community engagement and support a stronger union through community activism and youth leadership.

In announcing Salinas as one of ten ‘All-America City’ recipients the National Civic League had this to say about Salinas, “This community has taken a community-wide approach in reducing gang violence. This community’s youth are taking the lead in changing perceptions and promoting health and well-being. This community takes an entrepreneurial approach to solving complex and critical challenges.”

“All-America City Award winners inspire other communities with a sense of hope and purpose,” said National Civic League President Gloria Rubio-Corts. “They are leading the way when it comes to innovative efforts to promote positive community change.”

The All-America City competition brings together high-achieving communities to discuss the innovative ways they are addressing the most critical issues facing our communities.

Immediately following the award announcements, the National Civic League announced that Salinas native Luigi Manzo is the recipient of their National Youth Award. The award salutes Manzo’s exceptional youth leadership in community wide efforts.

All of us here at News Channel 5 salute the Salinas community at-large and the Salinas youth delegation with their efforts to secure this prestigious national recognition.

The National Civic League says that communities that have won this designation have received national attention. Plus, being an All-America City has helped communities secure new businesses, increase tourism, and secure state and federal grants.
