Monterey water main break sends thousands of gallons onto downtown streets

UPDATE 6/15/2015 11:03 a.m.: Clean up crews said more than 200,000 gallons of water rushed onto downtown Monterey streets Monday morning after a water main break.

Crews with California American Water said its a company line and the break was reported around 6 a.m.. They said it took three hours to stop the leak.

Fifty to 75 businesses are affected in the area of Calle Principal and Jefferson St., crews said. Those businesses may not have water back for about four hours. However businesses who spoke with NewsChannel 5 said they have water right now.

PREVIOUS STORY: Monterey Fire said crews are working to fix a water main break at Calle Principal and Jefferson St. Monday morning.

Crews said thousands of gallons leaked onto the streets, but the break has now been stopped.

Firefighters said no businesses were affected in the area.
