Man arrested for assaulting mother and Salinas officers, police said
Salinas Police said they arrested a man after he threw his mother into traffic and for assaulting officers Friday night.
At 7:14 p.m., officers responded to a report of a man screaming and running into traffic on North Main Street just north of Bernal Drive. Officers found Jose Velasco, 28, slamming his mother into the pavement of the northbound lane. As officers tried to get him off his mother, Velasco began to resist and attacked officers, police said.
At one point, police said Velasco was able to grab an officer’s taser. Additional officers were called on scene.
“As other officers arrived on scene, Velasco continued to struggle and resist, eventually needing 5 officers and the use of batons to control and place him into handcuffs,” police said in a press release.
As Velasco was being transported to Natividad Medical Center, police said he tried to bite both an officer and a Salinas Fire Paramedic. Once at the hospital, he had to be “chemically restrained,” police said.
As soon as he was released, Velasco was booked into Monterey County jail for several felony sections and parole violation.
