UPDATE: Highway 101 in Salinas re-opens after grass fire
UPDATE 4:41 p.m: Lanes on Highway 101 southbound in Salinas at Airport Road are re-opening after a grass fire, according to CHP.
Crews are still on-scene mopping up.
UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: CHP said it is getting ready to re-open southbound lanes on Highway 101 at Airport Road in Salinas after they were shut down because of a grass fire.
At about 3:30 p.m. southbound lanes were closed at Airport Road and northbound lanes were closed at Abbott Street.
UPDATE 3:44 p.m.: Highway 101 southbound is shut down to all traffic.
A ladder truck is preventing traffic from getting through because of a grass fire.
PREVIOUS STORY: Initial reports from California Highway Patrol indicate crews are battling a grass fire on the southbound side of Highway 101 at Airport Road in Salinas.
CHP also reports traffic is backing up on the freeway because of smoke affected both directions.
