Power restored to 17,000 in Salinas after police talk man down from power pole
UPDATE: 7:58 P.M.
About 17,000 customers have their lights back on after the Salinas Police Hostage Negotiation Team and Monterey County crisis workers talked a man down from an electrical power pole, police said.
Police said the 47-year-old man yelled at officers to shoot him.
The crisis forced Pacific Gas & Electric crews to deactivate the powerline on Sansome Street north of the Amtrack station.
It took negotiators 3.5 hours to talk the man down, but he jumped the last 12-15 feet and police said he may have fractured his tailbone.
He was taken to Natividad Medical Center for evaluation, police said.
