Making a Difference: Peace of Mind Dog Rescue
About six years ago, Carie Broecker received some difficult news. She learned her senior friend Alice was terminally ill. Wanting to give Alice peace of mind, she agreed to take care of her dog savannah after she passed.
“It came to a point where doctors told her she had a few weeks to live and she needed to make sure her affairs were in order” said Carie Broecker, Executive Director for Peace of Mind Dog Rescue.
She then realized there was a need for seniors who can no longer care for their pets. She then teamed up with Co-Found Monica Rua and developed Peace of Mind Dog Rescue in Pacific Grove. The organization has made it their mission to help terminally ill seniors and older dogs at risk of euthanasia.
“If something happens to them we will make sure their animals get placed. We bring them into a foster program and adopt them out” said Rua.
“We bring peace to much more than the person who was connected to the dog, but everyone who’s going through the process of losing a loved one” says Broecker.
Since 2009, the organization has rescued more than 750 dogs. But it wouldn’t be possible without funding from private donors and more than 400 volunteers. A group that’s making a difference by offering peace of mind and a second chance to some who would otherwise be forgotten.
