UPDATE: Former King City cop sentenced to a month in jail, three years probation
UPDATE 4/10/2015: On Friday, former King City police officer Jaime Andrade was sentenced to a month in jail and three years of probation for pleading guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge in February.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said Andrade will also be subject to search and seizure by law enforcement without a warrant to do so, during his probation.
Andrade is also ordered to serve 200 hours of community service.
PREVIOUS STORY: Former King City Police Officer Jaime Andrade, 37, pleaded guilty a misdemeanor gun charge Friday, avoiding a trial.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said Andrade negligently stored an unregistered assault weapon in his Soledad home. Last July, his 17-year-old stepson was arrested in North Salinas after a traffic stop and was found carrying Andrade’s unregistered assault weapon.
On Friday, the DA’s office said Andrade took a plea deal for misdemeanor negligent storage of a firearm and a civil penalty of $300 for two unregistered assault weapons. He called the possible trial “stressful.”
“Having to deal with the people you work with,” Andrade said, “Then family members having to be involved with the case.”
Prosecutors said they found evidence of a second weapon as they were preparing for trial. Jury selection was set to begin Monday, March 2. On Friday, the second gun case was dismissed.
Andrade faces a maximum sentence of one year in jail and three years on probation. He will be sentenced April 10.
Andrade is no longer with King City police. He was one of the six officers arrested in February for various charges linked to an alleged towing scheme. Andrade didn’t want to directly address that issue with KION.
“The residents that I dealt with and know me,” Andrade explained, “(They) know what kind of person I am and how I helped them. So, I’m just glad I was there to help them at a time they needed the help.”
