Second conviction in San Ardo gang killing
A man found guilty of orchestrating a gang attack resulting in the killing of another man in San Ardo was sentenced Friday to 22 years to life in prison.
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said Enrique Nunez Lopez, 26, of Guadalupe, California, murdered Daniel Fraga on July 28, 2012.
Prosecutors said Lopez called a gang meeting in San Ardo to discuss the status of Fraga as a fellow Sureno gang member. Gang members also testified Lopez called for the ritual beating of a juvenile female gang member.
Prosecutors said a fight ensued when Hector Reyes, a cousin of the beaten girl, showed up to rescue her and defend Fraga.
Gang member Juan Salazar, convicted on two counts of first-degree murder, shot both Fraga and Reyes, killing them. Prosecutors said Salazar fled to Mexico with his juvenile girlfriend, prompting an Amber Alert. He eventually turned himself in at the border and received a prison sentence of 100 years-to-life.
Lopez was sentenced to second-degree murder.
