Food Bank for Monterey County hopes to reopen warehouse next week
A major development in the aftermath of the arson at the Food Bank for Monterey County. The crew at the Food Bank hopes to have the warehouse up and running next week. Once the warehouse is reclaimed, they can start replenishing the food supply that feeds 20% of Monterey County. It’s one step closer to getting back to normal.
The docks that were destroyed by a suspected arsonist have been repaired. The refrigeration unit that was damaged with fire and smoke is now up and running. The executive director of Food Bank says she’s grateful for the community response. Not only businesses, but individuals have really stepped up financially. A lot of people have been asking about dropping off nonperishable food. The Food Bank says it will be able to start receiving donations soon.
“So we are really hoping that we can be up and running normal operations by next week,” Melissa Kendrick, executive director of the Food Bank for Monterey County said. “Of course we still have to bring in a lot more inventory, cause as you know we had to dispose of all of the inventory that was in the warehouse. As soon as we are up and running we are going to be welcoming any food donations at that time.”
Unfortunately, there’s still a suspected arsonist on the loose. Salinas fire officials have not received any credible leads into who caused the half million dollars in damage. There is a $6,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction. You can call 1-800-78-CRIME to leave a tip.
