Making a Difference: Quilters Guild
Terann Carr is a Volunteer Outreach Coordinators for the Monterey Peninsula Quilters Guild. She says she’s always had a passion for sewing. She created her first quilt in 1994 and gave it to her parents as an anniversary gift. 20 years later, the art of quilting has helped her find purpose.
“There’s something about handling the fabric, seeing the colors, appreciating the design. It’s fun to collect fabrics, get ideas and draw designs. You get excited about every step you complete.” says Carr.
With each patch, Terran helps to create quilts that are donated to local hospitals, fosters homes and treatment centers throughout Monterey County.
Claudia Sammis is the president for the Monterey Peninsula Quilters Guild. She says each quilt represents comfort and is a wonderful creative outlet.
It’s a mission that the Quilters Guild hopes inspires the community. Each year, 200 members showcase their talents to bring attention to the fine art of quilting.
“Our quilters guild, which has been around since 1978 has really worked as part of its mission statement too be a part of the community and to give back.” says Sammis.
Last year, the organization donated more than 300 quilts to premature babies, foster children homeless veterans and patients battling cancer and dialysis in Monterey County.
A group that’s making a difference by providing comfort, encouragement and hope with each stitch.
The Monterey Peninsula Quilters Guild will be showcasing their work this weekend at the Good Old Days event in Pacific Grove.
Their display runs April 10-12. For more information head to http://www.mpqg.org/
