Measure B helps bring new high school to Salinas
A new high school is one step closer to becoming a reality in Salinas. The new school will be in the northeast part of town and it’s all thanks to funding from Measure B.
This $89 million project will sit on 40 acres off of Rogge Road in Salinas.
Karen Luna works for the school district and said the high school is much farther along than people may think.
“It’s very huge. We have completed the environmental impact report for the Department of Toxic Substance Control. We did all the plans and specifications,” said Luna.
With money from the first bond measure in 2002 — the new designs finally bring the new school to life.
And with Measure B passing in November, the $89 million for construction will make the school a reality.
That’s something parents and students may be happy to hear after years of overcrowding at current high schools like North Salinas, Alisal, Salinas and Everett Alvarez. Everett Alvarez is the newest school in the district, built in 1995.
“No matter what school you go to, it’s going to help. It will assist with having less kids in the hallways less students in the lunch lines” said Luna.
It’s still to be determined who will go to the new school, but Luna said it will come with many new tech advantages.
“It’ll house special ed students, career tech ed students, so it’s going to meet all the needs of the students of Salinas,” said Luna.
The goal — to break ground in August.
The district plans to open the school in the fall of 2018. It’s being built to hold 1,500 students. There hasn’t been a name proposed; Luna said a committee will be formed to make that decision.
