CoderDojo program preps kids for technology careers

Hartnell College has teamed up to offer Saturday classes to help young kids on coding. It’s part of a global movement called CoderDojo, which teaches kids this important skill as well as develop websites, apps, programs games and explore with technology.

“In the future I want to pursue a technological career so this is helping me reach that goal,” student Marco Pizarro, 13, said.

With Silicon Valley close to the Central Coast, program organizers said this is getting kids on the right track to success.

“So it’s really important that our students are prepared to meet some great future opportunities,” Steinbeck Innovation Foundation chairman Dennis Donohue said.

“There’s job opportunities everything is turning into technology and if students at a very young age know how to code, of course they’re gonna be ahead of the game,” CoderDojo program director Maggie Melone said.

Students who are part of the program range in age from seven to late teens.
