SPCA of Monterey County: Donations needed for rescue horses
The SPCA for Monterey County needs your help keeping their rescue horses healthy.
It has been a hard year for horses in Monterey County. With the historic drought driving up hay costs, many owners simply can’t afford to care for their horses and others have even abused them.
The SPCA steps in to give the horses a second chance, but SPCA staff members can’t do it alone.
“We need donations. We need the funds to be able to care for these horses every day,” said Stacie McGrady, Barn Manager at the SPCA for Monterey County.
McGrady told News Channel 5 they are caring for more than 30 horses right now and it costs about $100 per month to care for them and that doesn’t include veterinarian bills and other medical needs.
“It’s very challenging when they’ve been so horribly neglected and they’re underweight and their teeth haven’t been done and they have ulcers in their mouth,” said McGrady.
McGrady also told News Channel 5 they have many different horses the public can adopt.
“I think people are surprised to learn we have horses here at the SPCA and have horses of all different breeds, colors, experience and age. We have rid-able horses, we have children horses.”
The SPCA even has a seven-year-old pony named Bradley.
“He’s a really cute little guy. We love walking him around and giving him treats not too many though,” said Jackie Lee, staff member for the SPCA for Monterey County.
McGrady said they are still trying to find a home for a mare named Sky. They also have other horses who are waiting for their forever homes.
The SPCA now needs your help to keep the horses healthy and happy.
