Hollister schoolkids wear blue in support of law enforcement

It was a sea of blue at Spring Grove Elementary School on Thursday. Hundreds of students from kindergarten to 8th grade wore all shades of blue to show support for local law enforcement.

School staff member Erin Livingston said, “They’re people you shouldn’t be scared of. They’re here for positive reasons to keep you safe.”

That’s the message Livingston is hoping to pass on to these kids through the ‘Step Out In Blue’ campaign. It’s a national event that started last year in response to all the anti-police protests. Supporters vow to wear blue every third Thursday of the month. And now Livingston has brought the campaign to Hollister.

“One of the major things we’re doing is making sure the kids know these are mommies and daddies and uncles and friends, boyfriends – that are all here every single day voluntarily putting themselves in harm’s way to make sure that you’re safe,” said Livingston.

Hollister Police Chief David Westrick even stopped by the school for a surprise visit to say thank you for all the support.

“The support we have from the community really makes the job that much worthwhile,” said Westrick.
