Multiple shooting suspects arrested in Seaside; Guns siezed
A spike in gang violence in Seaside has residents speaking out. What was supposed to be a news conference about recent shootings in the area turned into a passionate discussing from residents about gangs in the community.
“I hate to see our young people out here dying,” said Seaside resident Charlotte Lee.
Lee along with 20 other residents showed up at Seaside City Hall Saturday to hear what police had to say about the work they’ve been doing to stop a spike in gang violence.
“Altogether four guns were seized, eight people have been arrested,” said Police Chief Vicki Myers.
But as officers announced the arrests they’ve made related to gang activity recently in the city, residents began to show their frustration.
One woman said “there’s a real reality that people are falling victim to the streets.”
A Seaside man spoke about the lack of trust in police. “It’s this honor amongst thieves, and there’s no such thing as honor and thieves in the same sentence. But how do you get the people to feel more comfortable?”
Residents told News Channel 5 they’re concerned about the rash of shootings that took place right after the New Year.
The first shooting happened in the 1400 block of San Pablo Avenue. It happened in the early morning hours on New Year’s Day.
Later that same day there was another drive-by shooting. Then on Jan. 2 shots were fired between rival gang members in broad daylight.
Several days later police took to the streets and arrested multiple suspected gang members in connection to the shootings. Officers also seized three fire arms and drugs.
Charlotte Lee was glad to hear about the arrests. But she said the city’s struggle with gang violence is far from over.
“As a parent myself, it’s time for us to take back our youth and change this community,” said Lee.
In response to the recent shootings, the Seaside Police Department is holding a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Oldemeyer Center.
