Soquel Avenue back open after fatal accident investigation

UPDATE 12-26-14, 3:22pm: Santa Cruz Police have re-opened Soquel Avenue after hours of investigating a fatal hit and run accident. Police are now reviewing surveillance from nearby businesses. Still no word on who the victim is.

UPDATE 12-26-14, 12:40pm: The Santa Cruz Police Department is looking for a full size white pick-up truck, which has front end damage. A witness saw the suspect driving away from the scene going east on Soquel Avenue.

Witnesses say the bicyclist was hit from behind by the truck at approximately 6:40am while riding eastbound on Soquel Avenue near Hagemann Avenue.The pick-up truck driver also hit a traffic signal.

There is a makeshift memorial for the cyclist who was killed, which was created by staff members of the Mental Health Client Action Network who saw the accident.

12-26-2014: Soquel Avenue will be closed between Park Way and Hagemann Avenue for the next five hours due to a fatal accident involving a car and a cyclist, according to the Santa Cruz Police Department.

Westbound Soquel Avenue will be diverted to Park Way.

Eastbound Soquel Avenue will be diverted to Trevethan Avenue.
