King City pool vandalized

Pool employees at the King City recreation center said the vandalism had to have happened sometime between last Thursday when they closed and yesterday when they re-opened.

The extent of the damage is still being determined but the city said it will cost thousands of dollars to clean up.

King City councilman Mike LeBarre isn’t joking when you see the size of some of this pool equipment. City rec staff said it will take a crane to pull out the pull cover reel sitting at the bottom of the deep end.

“So when you see vandalism happening you start going oh that is going to cost us, it costs the community and that is really sad,” said LeBarre.

The city already paid $90,000 toward repairing the iconic waterslide. That work is being done right now, said LeBarre.

With this recent vandalism, the recreation center will likely be set back at least a couple thousand dollars.

Lifeguard stands, tables and bleachers were all thrown in the pool. The bleachers stayed above water thanks to the lane lines, those were able to be pulled out already.

Recreation coordinator Andrea Wasson said those pool cover racks weigh a couple hundred pounds.

“So many families have grown up coming to this pool learning to swim at this pool bringing their families to this pool that its just an unfortunate thing that some individuals decided to trash it,” said Wasson.

Families like Hillary Hughes who live right across the street and has been swimming there for years.

“Disappointed to see that someone in our community would come and do this. It’s like such a shame that someone would come and do this for fun, when we are trying to offer a lot of fun programs that people could come in and do,” said Hughes.

But now that fun will have to wait until after the holidays when crews can come in to clean it up.

The pool rec center does not have surveillance cameras. Staff believes the vandals hopped over the barb wire fence.
