Child molester convicted on 20 Counts faces 150 years to life
50 year old Corey Nevin Marshall has been found guilty of 20 counts involving oral sex with a child, lewd acts with a child, unlawful sexual intercourse, sodomy, sexual penetration, witness dissuasion and aggravated sexual assault of a child.
In 1986, Marshall was previously convicted in Contra Costa County of multiple counts of forcible sexual assaults and served 17 years in state prison.
Assistant District Attorney Rafael Vazquez says, “This community owes a great deal of gratitude to the ladies and gentlemen who served on this jury and who carefully weighed all of the evidence before reaching their verdicts.” Says Vazquez, “Their verdicts ensure that the defendant will spend the rest of his life in prison and he will not victimize any other child in our community.”
In August of 2012, Marshall engaged in a sexual relationship with a 13-year old child before she started the 8th grade. Through the early weeks of the relationship, police say Marshall groomed the child by writing love letters and expressed his intention to marry her. Over a period of 5 months, Marshall repeatedly sexually assaulted the child on multiple occasions and tried numerous times to dissuade her from reporting her victimization. Despite the defendant’s attempts, the child ultimately found the courage to report the sexual assaults to law enforcement.
Scotts Valley Police and the District Attorney’s office conducted the investigation.
After 2 weeks of trial, the jury deliberated for approximately one day before returning guilty verdicts on 20 of 21 counts and finding true all other allegations regarding his prior convictions.
Marshall will be sentenced on January 6, 2015 in Department 3 of the Santa Cruz County Superior Court. He is facing a potential sentence of more than 150 years to life.
