Sheriff: Intoxicated person asks for ride home, gets burglarized

Santa Cruz Sheriff deputies say a man who was walking home intoxicated lost thousands of dollars of property after the man who offered him a ride, then stole from the victim when he passed out.

The burglary happened September 21st but deputies weren’t notified until the 24th of the incident.

The 66-year-old victim who lives on East Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, said he was intoxicated and walking home just before 7:00pm near Sunny Cove, when he flagged down a passing car for a ride home to sleep it off.

The driver gave the man a ride back to his home and helped him inside. Deputies say the driver waited inside the home until he was asleep.

Then, over a period of four hours, investigators say the driver accompanied by his young daughter removed two large screen televisions, furniture, a laptop computer, golf clubs, two men’s suits and a tuxedo from the home.

The Sheriff’s Department said the suspect entered the residence numerous times as he loaded his car with the victim’s belongings.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male approximately 20 years old, wearing black shoes, white socks, black shorts, a white tee-shirt and a black beanie with multi-colored stripes. The entire incident was captured on the home’s video surveillance system.

The car was described as 90’s model dark colored import vehicle. The toddler is believed to be the driver’s daughter.

The Sheriff’s Office requests that anyone with any information regarding the identity of the suspect or the toddler to please call Sheriff’s Office dispatch at (831) 471-1121.
