Officials investigating attempted homicide at Salinas Valley State Prison

A stabbing at Salinas Valley State Prison Tuesday afternoon is under investigation by prison officials.

Just after 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, an inmate approached staff in the dining hall and asked to go back to his assigned cell. Staff noticed he was bleeding and activated their alarm. The man collapsed shortly after and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. As of Tuesday evening, the man was in critical condition.

Prison officials detained all inmates assigned to the dining hall immediately after the incident, and inmate movement was being limited. The Office of the Inspector General was notified about the incident.
