Campaign underway to help high-risk communities prone to fire dangers

An effort is underway to help some of the communities prone to fire dangers on the Central Coast. The Fire Safe Council For Monterey County kicked off a campaign to raise funds and awareness.

The goal is to help protect lives, property and the environment from devastating wildfires.

Seth Parker, the council’s president, said it’s not a matter of if a fire will spark, but when it will.

The council started following the Basin Complex Fire in 2008. It was one of the largest wildfires in the state’s history, wiping out nearly 163,000 acres and several homes, including some in Monterey County.

It helps at-risk communities apply for grants from the federal government to help with things like evacuation routes and education programs.

The Council wants the public to help donate toward a project, promote a fundraising event, or even become active members.

“We’re trying to encourage homeowners to look at their environment, whether it’s just their property or surrounding areas and have that consideration. What if it was on fire? How can we improve our resiliency? How can we survive a fire without having any negative effects?” Parker said.

Over the past few years the council brought in more than $1 million worth of help to Monterey County.

This year, the California Fire Safe Council awarded 38 grants of more than $4 million to 30 counties.
