Wonders of the Central Coast: Wilder Ranch State Park

Just west of Santa Cruz, an open tract of land stretches from the mountains to the sea. Preserved for its natural environment and cultural heritage in 1974, Wilder Ranch exists today as a state park.

“Today, we represent what was happening back in the time when the dairy farm had just begun in the late 1800s,” explained Park Ranger Jamie Stamps.

She showed me around the 7,000-acre park on a recent afternoon.

“There are so many opportunities you have here at Wilder Ranch. You have the cultural preserve that has the historic buildings,” said Stamps. “You can tour through and get living demonstrations.”

Demonstrations of life back in the 1800s include almost anything you could expect to find on a farm – animals, implements and even a blacksmith shop. The experience is tailored for all ages, including kids.

“They learn a little bit about the history,” said Stamps of the children who visit. “They’re able to wash clothes like they did at the turn of the century and do arts and crafts, and experience what life was like for the kids who used to live here.”

Beyond the cultural heritage, the park features plenty of recreational opportunities including hiking, biking and equestrian activities.

The views from the park’s higher elevations and even from the coastline are very picturesque.

Park staff is supplemented by a generous group of hard-working volunteers

“There is no doubt that Wilder Ranch is a Wonder of the Central Coast,” said Stamps. “I feel that Wilder is a gem within Santa Cruz County, which is full of gems itself.”

The area has a little of everything from stunning examples of rugged coastline to the scenic hills filled with recreational opportunities. Also, you can’t forget all of the cultural heritage in between. That certainly makes this area one of the Wonders of the Central Coast.

For more information about the park, visit the state parks website.

Tours and living history demonstrations are conducted every weekend from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with guided tours of the ranch buildings offered at 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a tour, call 426-0505.

There are 34 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails on the property, but you’ll have to leave Fido at home for this one — dogs aren’t allowed at Wilder Ranch State Park.
